Paralympian Oscar Pistorius has just been handed a 13-year jail term as his shockingly lenient sentence is increased for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
The Olympic and Paralympian repeatedly shot his model girlfriend as she hid behind the door of his bathroom in his home in Pretoria in February 2013.
Oscar Pistorius was last year jailed for six years in a ruling that was heavily criticised.
Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal today increased his jail term to 15 years and after time already spent in custody, this will amount to 13 years and five months. The state argued his original sentence was “shockingly lenient”.
A man who once inspired millions triggered his own spectacular fall from grace with his obsession with guns.
Tania Koen, a spokeswoman for the Steenkamp family, told Reuters today: “This is an emotional thing for them. “They just feel that their trust in the justice system has been confirmed this morning.”
The disabled runner who became a groundbreaking Olympian who could do no wrong back in 2012. The sprint runner had both his legs amputated below the knee when he was a baby and overcame huge obstacles in his life to become one of the worlds best-known athletes.
Oscar was a determined and ambitious South African who wanted to race against able-bodied athletes and after overcoming many objections from the governing bodies, the double-amputee became the first Paralympian to race in the Olympics with able-bodied athletes.
The Paralympian inspired millions of people, both the able and disabled and became a household name. He also raced in the Paralympics picking up two gold medals and setting two world records at the same time.
He was an international star, with a long career ahead of him.
Away from the athletics track, Pistorius had formed a close relationship with South African model Reeva Steenkamp.
